Media’s Role in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals: Highlights from the Media SDGs Dialogue
Does the media truly play a role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? This was the central theme of the Media SDGs Dialogue held on December 19, 2024, where journalists from across the country gathered to reflect on their contributions to raising awareness and driving progress on the SDGs among Ugandans.

Role of media in the SDGs Implementation
Opening the Conversation, Mr. Muwanguzi George, President of the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU), set the tone with an deep message on the media’s influence. He emphasized the power of journalists to shape public understanding and engagement with the global SDG agenda. “As journalists, you are the bridge between the SDGs and the public. Take the time to understand these global goals, track their progress, and report not just within Uganda but also in the global context,” he urged. Mr. Muwanguzi further highlighted how Uganda’s National Development Plan (NDP) aligns with the SDGs. With NDP IV in development, he called on journalists to spotlight achievements, identify challenges, and hold stakeholders accountable from the previous one.

Reflecting on Goal 2: Zero Hunger, he acknowledged Uganda’s strong food security record but pointed out that 20% of the population still faces food insecurity. “Ask the tough questions,” he encouraged. “Why is this happening, and what can be done? Use facts and comparisons with other countries to enrich your reporting.”
Building Capacity for SDG Advocacy, the event featured breakout sessions led by Ronald Kabuye, where journalists explored how to enhance their role in SDG advocacy. Key ideas included:

Localization: Reporting in local languages to reach diverse audiences and ensure no one is left behind.
Capacity Building: Training journalists to improve their understanding of the SDGs and their reporting skills.

Resource Mobilization: Advocating for financial support to cover stories from remote and underserved areas
Inspiring Change Through Media
In his closing remarks, Mr. Richard Baguma, UNAU Secretary-General, emphasized the transformative power of media. “You are not just reporters; you are changemakers. Use your platforms to inspire action, influence policies, and drive progress through compelling storytelling and critical analysis,” he said.

He encouraged journalists to foster collaborations, both locally and internationally, and to align their work with national frameworks like the NDP. He also stressed the importance of focusing on human capital development—a core pillar of Uganda’s development strategy—through education, skills development, and poverty reduction.
A Call to Action
With only five years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, the role of media has never been more important. Journalists have the power to keep the SDGs in the spotlight, hold leaders accountable, and inspire communities to take action. As Mr. Muwanguzi aptly put it, “The media is not just a storyteller; it is a driver of change.”
