Promoting UN Ideals Among Youth: The Role of UNAU University Chapters in Uganda

The United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the values, objectives, and principles of the United Nations (UN) in Uganda. As a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), UNAU plays a vital role in spreading the ideals of the UN and its Charter within Uganda. Central to these efforts are the youth-centered initiatives led by UNAU, with a significant focus on its University Chapters across the country.

UNAU’s Mission and Vision in Uganda

The mission of UNAU is to foster a broader understanding and support for the United Nations’ objectives in Uganda, particularly among young people. Through education, advocacy, and awareness programs, UNAU seeks to engage and empower Ugandans to contribute to the UN’s global goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 SDGs address crucial global challenges—ranging from poverty and hunger to climate action and equality—making them particularly relevant for young people who are the future drivers of positive change.

UNAU University Chapters: Building Awareness and Engagement

To reach and engage young minds, UNAU has established University Chapters in a number of universities and tertiary institutions across Uganda. These chapters act as local hubs where students come together to learn, discuss, and take action on global issues, with a focus on the UN’s core objectives and SDGs. Currently, UNAU has chapters in the following universities:

  • Makerere University
  • Kyambogo University
  • Nkumba University
  • Islamic University in Uganda
  • Nakawa Vocational Training Institute
  • Makerere University Business School
  • Uganda Christian University
  • Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology
  • Kampala International University
  • Cavendish University
  • Gulu University
  • Mbarara University

Each chapter works to promote awareness of the UN’s goals and encourage students to participate in activities that align with the organization’s mission. Chapter members regularly engage in initiatives such as workshops, debates, panel discussions, and community outreach projects. These activities enable students to explore topics like peacebuilding, human rights, environmental protection, and sustainable development, helping them develop critical thinking and leadership skills.

Youth as Agents of Change

UNAU believes that young people are powerful agents of change who can drive sustainable development. Through University Chapters, UNAU empowers students with the knowledge and tools they need to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. By fostering an understanding of global issues, these chapters help students recognize their role in addressing challenges that affect not only Uganda but the entire world.

These young leaders are actively encouraged to think globally and act locally, channeling their passions and ideas into impactful initiatives. By instilling in students a sense of global citizenship, UNAU nurtures a new generation of leaders committed to building a more equitable and sustainable future.

Looking Forward: The Future of UNAU and its University Chapters

As UNAU continues its mission to bring the principles of the United Nations to Uganda, the association envisions expanding its reach to even more universities and tertiary institutions. This expansion will help spread awareness of the UN’s goals and principles among a larger youth audience, inspiring a growing number of young Ugandans to contribute to sustainable development and peace.

The UNAU University Chapters are a testament to the commitment of Ugandan youth to address the pressing issues of our time. As these chapters grow and flourish, they create a foundation for a resilient, informed, and engaged community that will continue to support and promote the ideals of the United Nations for generations to come.
