Empowering Uganda’s Youth: UNA Uganda’s Strategic Push for SDGs in Schools

The United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) has taken significant strides this year to empower young minds through education on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a focus on reaching both primary and high school students, UNAU’s efforts have been particularly impactful, in partnership with the United Nations Association of Finland. Together, these organizations have successfully conducted SDG sensitization campaigns across 150 schools in and around Kampala, targeting institutions with a high population of underprivileged youth

These schools were strategically selected to ensure that students from marginalized backgrounds had the opportunity to learn about and engage with the global goals. Understanding the importance of peer-to-peer learning, UNAU organized training sessions for selected representatives from various chapters and fellows. This approach facilitated an environment where young people could learn about sustainable development issues from their peers, making the sessions more relatable and effective.

The campaign kicked off in various locations within and around Kampala, with young champions leading discussions on the global agenda. These champions played a crucial role in helping students connect the SDGs to their daily lives and understand their role in achieving these goals. One of the key observations during the campaign was the lack of awareness among some teachers about the SDGs. This gap presented an opportunity for the champions to bridge the knowledge gap by linking the SDGs to existing government programs, such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), the National Development Plans, and the Emyoga initiative. These connections provided a practical perspective that was well-received by the schools.

As Uganda’s curriculum continues to evolve, it is essential for teachers to stay informed about national, regional, and international processes, particularly those related to the United Nations. The involvement of young people in these processes is crucial, especially as many are still lagging in their participation and engagement with the 2030 Agenda.

UNAU remains committed to its mission of leaving no one behind by equipping Uganda’s youth with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle global challenges. Through its programs, chapters, and clubs, UNAU is proud to have extended knowledge about the UN’s processes and the SDGs to young people across the country. By doing so, UNAU is not only contributing to the global agenda but also ensuring that Uganda’s youth are prepared to play an active role in shaping a sustainable future.
