Action for the SDGs: Celebrating the 79th United Nations Day

Every year on October 24th, the world unites to honor the remarkable achievements and enduring mission of the United Nations. As we confront global challenges such as extreme poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, climate change, and escalating conflicts, this day serves as a powerful reminder of what multilateralism can achieve and of the work still ahead. This year’s UN Day celebrations emphasize the need for collective action, urging governments, civil society, academia, and citizens worldwide to strengthen their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In Uganda, the celebrations were held at MTN Omondi Stadium, where government officials, UN agencies—including IOM, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, WFP, UN Global Pulse, and UN Women and youth-led organizations like the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) gathered in a vibrant display of solidarity. Representatives from various UNAU chapters proudly carried banners and the UN flag, symbolizing unity and the ongoing mission of the UN in communities.

The event began with an energetic procession accompanied by the stirring sounds of trumpets and drums from the Uganda Police Force. Marchers traversed Kololo, City Square, and Lugogo, engaging the public and celebrating the United Nations’ dedication to peace, security, and sustainable development. Afterward, attendees enjoyed a lively Zumba session set to upbeat music, followed by games like balloon bursting, football, and the sack race. UNAU members proudly won the sack race, while the Uganda Parliament, led by Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, took home the trophy.

In line with the UN’s commitment to health and well-being, the celebration also featured HIV testing, Body mass index screening, and a blood donation drive, reinforcing the UN’s ongoing health advocacy in Uganda. The day’s team activities highlighted the power of networking and collaboration, underscoring the importance of unity in addressing global challenges.

As the UN continues to adopt new frameworks, such as the Pact for the Future, it calls for action to bring these global goals to local communities, ensuring that every individual can contribute meaningfully. With Agenda 2030 approaching, the urgency to localize these efforts and take impactful action has never been greater.

Happy 79th Birthday to the United Nations. Together, let’s drive action for a sustainable and inclusive future.
