Why Orientation Matters for UNAU Chapters

At the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU), we believe orientation is more than just an introduction, it is the foundation for effective leadership and meaningful engagement. With chapters and clubs established in learning institutions across Uganda, we make it a priority to ensure that our members are well-integrated into the mission and mandate of UNAU.

In recent weeks, our journey took us to Gulu University and Mbarara University, where we met with student cabinets and members. Together, we explored leadership development, personal growth, and the role of young people in advancing Agenda 2030. These sessions not only strengthened members’ understanding of UNAU’s work but also equipped them with the confidence and skills to take action in their communities.

A significant highlight of our discussions was tobacco control. Students openly shared their experiences, including how peers use shisha pots and access tobacco-related products. This sparked an important conversation where we worked to demystify common myths around “safe” or “less harmful” tobacco products. We emphasized a clear fact; no tobacco product is safe. This conversation tied directly to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Target 3.a, which calls for stronger implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Through these discussions, we introduced students to the tobacco taxation campaign and encouraged them to become advocates in their communities, recognizing that the tobacco industry often targets young people directly.

Orientation also goes beyond knowledge sharing. We aim to build soft skills that empower our members in both their personal and professional journeys. Skills such as public speaking, lobbying, project coordination, communication, and digital visibility are a must in this era. By acquiring these through their volunteer work with UNAU, members are better prepared to excel when employment opportunities arise turning their service into a pathway for future success.

At its core, orientation ensures that our young leaders are not just participants but champions of change ready to influence, advocate, and lead with purpose.
