Engaging parliamentarians to promote inclusion of peace in Post 2015 Dev't Agenda

UNAU
and Advance Afrika organized an MPs breakfast meeting that focused on the issue of peace and security. CSOs and Youth also participated in the breakfast meeting. With coverage from various media houses, the meeting emphasized  the need to include the issues of peace and security in the post 2015 development agenda with specific focus on Uganda.

As the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches, momentum is building towards defining a new development agenda to build on the achievements registered by the MDGs and also address the continuing development challenges facing the world today.

Member states of UN have been engaging in various consultations at national, international and regional levels. The teams of people who represent the views of the different results from the various consultations with NGOs, youth, Government officials.

6th Uganda Model UN launched

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The 6th Uganda Model UN youth simulation was a 3 - day conference  that converged over 55 University students was hosted by UNA-Uganda at Makerere University

Assuming positions of UN members states (delegations), Under simulation of the UN General Assembly (UNGA),over 30 delegations including; USA, China, Nigeria South Sudan, Iraq, Canada, Venezuela, DRC, Australia, Pakistan, Luxemborg and Uganda among others were focused on this year. Under the theme: “Beyond 2015 — Youths engagement in setting goals for post 2015 development agenda” engaged and practiced diplomacy through simulations of UN processes such as; decision making,plenary discussions, drafting resolutions, deliberations etc.

The Deputy Dean of students, Stephen Kateega officiated over the conference. While launching the youth assembly, he urged participants to be active and to attach value of this simulation in order for then to benefit from the practice hence adding value to them.

UNA-Uganda in talks to strengthen UN-NGO collaboration

Empowering youth with dialogue skills to solve conflict

A debate that attracted over 200 student was organised at Mengo senior secondary school in Kampala.  Themed; "Promoting peace-building and inter-cultural understanding", the debate aimed at promoting dialogue and instilling necessary skills among young people as a way of preventing conflict to ensure peace and security in societies.

Uganda's Sam Kutesa holds UN General Assembly Presidency

Hon. Sam Kutesa, Uganda’s former Minister for Foreign Affairs now presides over the UN General Assembly (UNGA)

The African Union voted him as the sole candidate to effectively represent African affairs to the UN.

However, Kutesa received a lot of opposition from the western diplomats who believed he was not the right match for the job.

Impact of South Sudan's war on Africa

The deadly turmoil that broke out on the 15th December 2013 in Juba threatens to ignite a full scale ethnic civil war across South Sudan. The fight for power between President, Kiir’s Dinkas and Machar’s Nuei, threaten to tumble a newly independent nation. South Sudan is one of the youngest member state in the UN having been welcomed in the UN General Assembly in 2011.

The UN Millennium  Development Goals (MDG’s) are set to expire  at the end of 2015.

The UN is conducting a series of consultations to come up with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) that will succeed the MDG’s.

Uganda is one of the countries taking part in the Post 2015 consultations that are being held world wide. As a way of capturing  the youths voices on the matter, United Nations Association of Uganda has been selected to take part in the implementation of the “Freedom from Violence "project by WFUNA

Youth's voice on the passed anti-gay bill in Uganda

Irrespective of the international community pressure, President Yoweri Museveni finally signed the controversial bill into law.

The bill punishes gay sex with up to life in prison.

This was after the President delegated a panel of experts to advise him on whether homosexuality was "learned" that is, if it was a behavior or an inborn condition. The scientist consensus statement concluded that homosexuality is not a disease or an "abnormality", but that it "can be influenced by environmental factors" such as "culture, religion, information, permissiveness". Homosexual behavior, the statement said, "needs regulation like any other human behavior, especially to protect the vulnerable".
