The United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) www.unauganda.org is a non profit, Non-Government Organization, duly registered in Uganda. The Association is affiliated to the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). www.wfuna.org

The UN Association of Uganda (UNAU) works to promote the Aims, Objectives, Principles and Ideals of the UN in Uganda as enshrined in the UN Charter.

Aims and Objectives

  • To promote the Aims and ideals of the UNITED NATIONS by way of ensuring an informed public and larger knowledge about the United Nations, it’s meaning and potentialities.
  • To work for the widest co-operation between Peoples and Nations of the World, to promote Uganda on the International scene and to work for the implementation of the UN Charter in Uganda.
  • To work in co-operation with all national and international groups and organizations to ensure economic, social and cultural justice, for equality between men and women and for a more just world.
  • To mobilize all the people of Uganda and other Resources for National Development, Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts, Human Rights Protection and Environmental Conservation.
  • To work and strive for a more relevant, equitable and sustainable Education System aimed at attaining the highest levels of self-actualization by the people of Uganda.
  • To do all such other things as are incidental or which are conducive to the attainment of the aims and objectives.


Past Projects

  • Uganda Model United Nations -UMUN- this is an annual event that takes place during the UN week. This is aimed at bringing the youth closer to the UN and also equip the youth with diplomatic and negotiation skills on the different issues.
  • Freedom from Violence- Including Peace, security and conflict prevention in the post 2015 development agenda.
  • Training in Advocacy for climate change and sustainability with UNA-Tanzania
  • Training in Human rights at the UN offices in Geneva – So you want to be the next high commission
  • Promoting sustainable development in the Lake Victoria Region through the implementation of the MDGs. The project involved UNA Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sweden and Norway. It involved the youth interacting with the communities around the lack Victoria region. Participants took part in one week conference training in Kampala Uganda and there after the team was divided into two groups one to Uganda Mukono district the other to Tanzania Mwanza province.
  • MDGs workshop organized by UNA-Uganda at the UNIC offices in Nairobi. The event attracted UNA members from Uganda, Kenya , Tanzania and Rwanda
  • R2P. UNA-Uganda took part in the R2P project. This included a briefing with the East African UNAs in Nairobi and later organized a workshop on R2P at one of the Universities. The event attracted several students from various Universities in Uganda.
  • UN Day- commemoration of the UN day has been done every year and this is in partnership with the UN resident coordinator’s office Uganda. The commemoration is used as a platform for the UN to interact more with the youth in the various educational institutions.
  • 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence
  • Monthly Newsletter- the event takes place every month. The platform helps communicate with the wider population and also keep the youth informed about what is happening in the world and the other UNAs
  • Zebra cross paintings by the different chapters in the different locations this was aimed at reducing on the levels of accidents that were happening in the country.
  • Charity out reaches.  The chapters visited at different times some of the under privileged children and offered support and love to them.
  • Commemoration of various UN days like:- World AIDS Day, Human Rights day, Population day, Environment day, 16 days of activism, Volunteers day
  • Youth engagement and empowerment- this is mainly through entrepreneurship projects. the youth are given a chance to be as creative as


Current Projects:

  • UN Day- commemoration of the UN day has been done every year and this is in partnership with the UN resident coordinator’s office Uganda. The commemoration is used as a platform for the UN to interact more with the youth in the various educational institutions.
  • Monthly news letter- the news letter is aimed at communicating to the world as whole and also improving writing skills of the youth.
  • Project leaders’ training- aimed at equipping the youth leadership skills.
  • Model UN, - this year’s MUN will focus on the post 2015 development agenda and  human rights
  • University mock MUNs. Universities in preparation for the Uganda MUN organize MUNs at a university level and these are aimed at helping them become familiar with the proceedings of the MUN.
  • School service program- creating a platform to engage with the youth in secondary school on UN issues affecting the youth.
  • Human rights education awareness. In secondary schools
  • Commemoration of various UN days like:- World AIDS Day, Human Rights day, Population day, Environment day, 16 days of activism, Volunteers day


Strengths:

  • A secretariat with an up to date resource center, Secretary General and a team of volunteers.
  • A net work of youth all over the country.
  • A network of young professionals. These have been part of the UNAU chapters and are now working in various different organizations.
  • Volunteers. A team of willing youth to contribute to the achievement and promotion of the UN ideals and bringing the youth closer to the UN.
  • Commitment and hard work team of youth.
  • Opportunity to have experiential hands on activities directly with the affected people.
  • Good cooperation with the UN in Uganda and the UNAs in the East African region.
